Tarneit way finding trail solar path lights

In 2023, Wyndham City Council created a colourful two-kilometre wayfinding trail in Tarneit with help from the local community. To encourage active transport and increase safety, the Council needed a flexible outdoor pathway lighting solution that could work around the challenging constraints of the site.

Meet me in Tarneit

Located on Melbourne’s outer western fringe, Tarneit is a rapidly growing suburb in the City of Wyndham. With help from the local community, Wyndham City Council created five decorative ground murals on the shared path connecting Cowies Hill Water Tower to Derrimut Road in Tarneit.

The murals along the two-kilometre path showcase the creativity of the Tarneit community and provide directional signage for nearby community facilities and activity centres.

“The ground murals create links between schools and gathering spaces that are bright, playful and provide helpful information to find one’s way through Tarneit via active transport options like walking and cycling,” Wyndham City Mayor Councillor Susan McIntyre said.

To increase safety and usage of the path throughout the day and night, the City of Wyndham needed a dependable outdoor pathway lighting system that was flexible enough to work around the challenging site constraints.

Project Challenges

No electricity and restricted use of pole (mounted) pathway lights

Restrictions on the site imposed by Melbourne Water meant that connection to the electricity grid was not allowed. In addition, on some sections of the path, poles were not permitted to be used to mount the pathway lights on.

For any other street light company, these constraints would have made the project very difficult, if not impossible. However, Leadsun’s Business Development Manager, Walter Terella was confident the City of Wyndham’s lighting needs could still be met using a suite of innovative Leadsun lighting products.

A challenging solar path light problem needing a flexible solution

“Our proven range of pathway lighting solutions don’t require any connection to the electrictiy grid, and our solar bollard lights enabled us to still provide lighting, even where pole mounted solar path lights were not permitted”, Mr Terella explained. “The project was complex, and required diligent, constructive and open communication between ourselves, the client and Melbourne Water.”

35 pole mounted solar path lights were installed along the two-kilometre stretch of path. On sections where poles were not allowed, 15 solar bollard lights were installed instead.

A combination of AE3 and AE6 solar engines were used to power both the pole mounted pathway lighting and the bollard lights. Each of the LED lights were programmed to run at full power for five hours after dusk, then dim to 20% output until dawn. EDGE remote wireless and control and monitoring was also specified to reduce maintenance costs in the future.

Colour, activity, excitement and light

Tarneit’s recently completed wayfinding trail has brought colour, activity, and excitement to the area. “It’s been fantastic to see these Tarneit Revitalisation projects contribute to creating a more active community,” said Cr McIntyre. “It was wonderful to see the community take part in the project, helping to paint the ground murals and the added lighting along the path to help the community safely use it in the winter evenings.” 

By integrating several different lighting products, Leadsun was able to successfully work around the sites challenging constraints. The Tarneit wayfinding trail is now illuminated from dusk until dawn, increasing safety and encouraging active transport and exercise for the whole community.
